"Trees" takes place a decade after silent, sentient creatures resembling enormous trees invade the Earth. These creatures don't seem to want anything from us, nor do they even acknowledge mankind's existence, simply putting down roots and keeping an unsettling vigil over the planet. While an understandable amount of chaos followed their arrival, things have calmed down and society has accepted their presence, but little is known about these mysterious invaders. Told through four distinct story lines, "Trees" explores the aftermath of the invasion.

Warren Ellis is again in fine form and Jason Howard (Astounding Wolf-Man) has a nice, flowing "sketchy" feel to his art (reminds me a little of Guy Davis, but less refined). The story is very character driven and a little slow paced, but it allows for the story to develop in ways we don't normally see in science fiction tales, especially those devoted to alien invasions. Warren Ellis is proving to be as adept at subtly telling a story about people we care about as he is at throwing punches. This, in combination with Howard's graceful, often borderless art, gives a feel of calm and serenity about the storyline that belies the strangeness of the overcast of events.
It's not War of the Worlds, that's for sure. But what it gives up in action, it gains in substance and character development.
Something different from one of the people I believe saved comics - Warren, take a bow - and yes, you too, Jason.
